380 ACP and 38 Special and Ruger ICP

deer hunter wedding scene

I'll be discussing the differences between Ruger LCP and ACP. These are the most commonly used handgun cartridges in law enforcement. You can ask me any questions or for more information. I would love to hear from you in the comments. Our comparison chart provides additional information about each cartridge.

380 ACP

380 ACP vs 38 Special: If you're thinking about purchasing a handgun for self defense, you might be wondering which one is better. The rounds are identical in many ways but have some significant differences. Both rounds have their advantages and drawbacks. The biggest difference is in the round's dimensions. A 38 Special bullet containing a 380 ACP bullet has a much lower power and is smaller in size, but it's still very effective.

Although the 380 cartridge is cheaper than 9mm, it costs more for ammunition. It is also more expensive, though many budget guns cost under $200. It's also easier to make, so it costs less per cartridge. This is an advantage for the 380 cartridge, but a broader appeal makes the 9mm caliber the better choice if you're not sure what to choose.

380 Special

There are two key differences between a 380 Special revolver versus a 38 Special revolver. The case sizes of the 38 Special revolver and the 380 Special revolver are slightly different. However, the bullets remain the same size. The difference in cartridge capacity is minimal and relates to the carrying capacity of the revolver. 38 Special revolvers have six rounds. While 380s can store six to twelve rounds, depending on their caliber, 380s can hold up to six to twelve rounds. The Bersa Thunder Plus 380 can contain up to fifteen rounds. Both revolvers are well-known for their long history dating back to 1897.

The energy that a cartridge produces depends on how fast it is fired and the size of the bullet. At 1,240 feet per second, a 115 grain 380 Special bullet can produce 395 foot pounds energy. A 9x19mm Parabellum round will fire a bullet that is only 120 grams but which is significantly faster. In this case, the 38 Special would have a slight advantage in energy.

.38 Auto

For a better understanding of how the cartridges perform, it is important to compare the performance of two pistols: the 380 vs the 38 Auto. Unlike the 38 Auto, the 380 ACP uses a bullet that is 85 to 95 grains in weight. These bullets have a MV of approximately 1000 feet per second and a maximum energy output of around 189 foot-pounds at the muzzle. A 380 ACP is comparable in performance to a 38 Special but offers significant improvements. A 380 ACP's bullets expand up to 1.4 times their diameter and penetrate up to 10 inches of ordnance gelatin. Federal also offers a 99 grain HydraShok Deep loads, which meet FBI penetration depth standards of 12 inches. These new loads have been specifically designed for this caliber bullet.

Comparable to the 380 Auto the 9mm Luger offers more power. The 9mm Luger has more powder storage space due to its larger cartridge (9x19mm). On the other hand, the 380 caliber has greater finesse and short-range accuracy. While 380 auto and 9mm have very little in common, both calibers are widely used in self-defense. This comparison between 38 Auto and 380 Cal will give you a better idea of which gun suits your needs.

Ruger LCP

The Ruger LCP was released in 2008 and is very similar in design to the Kel-Tec P3AT gun. Rick Perry famously shot a coyote using the LCP to stop it attacking his daughter. The LCP makes a good handgun for home defense. Its accuracy and reliability are exceptional. However, the recoil of this gun is very high. Although the trigger is quite easy to use, Ruger LCP requires that you have a proper grip and sight alignment.

Both cartridges have similar dimensions and weights, but the firing mechanism and cartridges of each cartridge differ. The 38 Special has a larger chamber, while the 380 holds more rounds in its magazine. The 38 Special comes with a single-stack mag that can hold up seven rounds. It all comes down to your preference for a revolver or a pistol.
